There Will Be Blood Paper Guidelines
ENGL 1102 SP2020
Guidelines: 4 page minimum, 12 pt. Times New Roman font, double-spaced, MLA format.
Objective: The aim of this paper is to investigate the roles that wealth, greed, competition, etc. play in the quest for the American Dream. To do so, choose one of the following topics:
- Given what you now know about the characteristics of Modernism, argue the ways in which Daniel Plainview exists as a Modernist villain rather than a Modernist hero.
- Daniel Plainview and Eli Sunday both represent men on the hunt for the American Dream. Compare and contrast the methods, characteristics, abilities, etc. that both men use as they embark on this journey.
- Daniel Plainview was written as an amalgamation of various titans of industry of the time. Men like J.D. Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan, and Andrew Carnegie all served as inspiration in the writing of Plainview’s character. Choose one of these titans of industry and compose an informative research analysis in which you explain the journey taken by the businessman of your choosing.
- The social and political climate of the early 20th century shares many similarities with the current characteristics of modern times. Highlight these similarities—as well as any significant differences— in hopes of showing your reader the way that history does in fact repeat itself.
