First Essay Assignment
Racial Fault Lines offers a comparative analysis of the historical experience of people of color in California after the Mexico-U.S. War of 1846-48. It does so by carefully assessing the differences in the historical experiences of the Mexican population with that of the Indian and Asian populations in the state. The author argues that it was the racialization of Mexicans as a “white†population and their being granted U.S. citizenship that largely accounts for these different historical experiences. This first assignment is designed to have you critically assess the different historical experiences of these groups by drawing directly from the analysis of various chapters in Racial Fault Lines.
Please answer the following essay question: What accounts for the major differences between the historical experiences of both Mexicans and the indigenous Indian populations in California during the last half of the nineteenth century? Your essay should be a two way comparison of the experiences of both Mexicans and Indians during that time period.
Your essays should be a minimum of 1,000 words and no more than 1,100 words. Please draw directly from the book with appropriate citations in preparing your essay and include a word count. Your essays should use a 12 point font, be double spaced, and have standard margins. It is also a good idea to carefully revise your essay before it is submitted and have someone proofread it for any errors you might have missed. Make sure that there are no contractions, slang terms, or personal points of view in these formal academic essays. Just tell me how the author explains these different historical experiences. Your essay will be evaluated on the basis of how well you draw from the book in answering the essay question.
